I went for a quick walk at the start of the Taranaki Falls walk on a crisp winter's afternoon and only 30 minutes into my walk it started to snow transforming the forest into a winter wonderland. There is something truly magical about experiencing Mt Ruapehu under a blanket of snow with the only sounds being the rustling of leaves, my footsteps crunching through the snow, and the falling snow on the ground. The peace and tranquility of the natural beauty left my soul refreshed and grateful to be alive.

A Hiker's Paradise in Winter

New Zealand's Mount Ruapehu offers a variety of trails suitable for different skill levels, from leisurely walks to challenging hikes during all seasons of the year. In winter, Ruapehu’s landscape transforms into snow-covered trails winding through forests and leading to panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual walker, there's a winter adventure waiting for you on this iconic mountain.

Taranaki Falls Loop: A Winter Fairy Tale

One of the most popular trails, the Taranaki Falls Loop, offers a moderate hike through stunning alpine terrain. The trail becomes even more enchanting in winter with snow dusting the native flora. The loop takes you past the Taranaki Falls, a 20-meter waterfall, through forest, over rivers, and across plains.

Essential Tips for a Winter Trek on Mount Ruapehu

  • Check the weather conditions: Mountain weather is unpredictable, so always check the latest forecast before heading out.

  • Dress in layers: Prepare for fluctuating temperatures by layering your clothing. Waterproof outerwear is essential.

  • Gear up: Invest in quality hiking boots, crampons, and ice axes if you plan on tackling more challenging trails.

  • Carry essentials: If you are going on a long hike pack a map, compass, headlamp, extra food and water, and a first-aid kit.

  • Umbrella: Carry an umbrella for extra protection – it can also be used as a handy walking pole.

  • Stay safe: Let someone know your itinerary and expected return time, and stick to marked trails to avoid getting lost.

Beyond the Trails: Turangi's Winter Charms

After a day on the mountain, you can warm up in the nearby town of Turangi. Known as the "Trout Fishing Capital of the World," Turangi offers cozy cafes, unique shops, hot pools, and the fascinating Tongariro National Trout Centre, where you can learn about the local fishing heritage and see native fish species up close.
